Monthly 6m net

by: N9YMC

A couple days ago, I had a chance to check into the monthly 6m net. I encourage each and every member (and non-members) reading this to check in to this net, if you have the equipment for the magic band. While the net allows for some rag chewing, it does follow a script and has a monthly topic of discussion. I've learned so much this week, between our monthly general membership meeting and the 6m net. While many of us have fears and even some deep rooted fears, I learned that people have fears of heights, being left in the dark, loosing a lottery ticket (that was me) and even fear of fish. Like I said, the things you learn by joining a net are endless. I wish the best for everyone in coming to cope with their fears and being able to overcome.

Join in on a net, you will never know what you will learn.

Al Sens - N9QLP (SK)

by: N9YMC

A long time club member, Al - N9QLP has passed and is now a Silent Key. Al had struggled in life with a couple issues, however these last 10 years was always on the other end and would strike up a QSO when he heard your call. For many years Al would take a table at the hamfest and sell some radios and antennas - he always had a fair deal. Al will be missed.

Maury Mead - W9FBC - SK

It is with sadness that I advise that Maurice (Maury) Mead - W9FBC has become a silent key. Maury was a charter member of the FCARC and active member of the club. Info on Maury's life and times can be found here: https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/postcrescent/obituary.aspx?n=maurice-mead&pid=197004750&fhid=14138

Maury will be missed.

Board of Directors - Elections

by: N9YMC

Serving on the Board of the FCARC has been and continues to be a rewarding experience. The Board is excited to finally be able to conduct our delayed 2020 elections later this month. In the 2020 cycle, we are electing a Vice-President for a two-year term, a Treasurer for a two-year term and 3 Member at Large positions- each having a one-year term. There is still time to nominate a candidate for the ballot. If you have a nomination, please forward that directly to me at N9YMC@yahoo.com

The voting will take place at this months General Membership meeting, which is August 17, starting at 7pm. There will be an in-person meeting at the Maplewood Middle School and a concurrent ZOOM portion of the meeting. Those unable to attend in person should look for the email with the ZOOM announcement.

For those unable to vote in person, we will be sending out an email with the ballot to all members of record that have a valid email address in our books. Expect these to email between August 12 and the 15th. There will be instruction in the email on when and where to return your email ballot to.

Join me in this exciting time and VOTE for your desired candidates for the above mentioned positions.

FIELD DAY 2020

by: N9YMC

Field Day 2020 is upon us. It starts Saturday morning at 8:30 with setup and runs through Sunday at 1pm. With Field Day 2020 comes some changes and that is that if you do not wish to wonder out to the club site, you can operate from your home station with your own call and list the club affiliation (Fox Cities Amateur Radio Club) on your submission form and ARRL will publish an aggregate score for all members of the club.

See Terry's email of earlier this week with a full explanation.

Have fun this weekend with Field Day and stay safe

Membership Meeting via Zoom

by: N9YMC

Great turnout on Saturday April 18 for the Membership Zoom test. Thanks to all who showed up and tested their computers, phones, iPads and tablets. Some tried multiple devises - that was fun! For the foreseeable future we will be meeting virtually with the Zoom platform. Nice thing about zoom, as some found out, you do not need a camera as you can log in with audio only if you wish.

Donna will be sending out an invite via email on the day of the meeting. This will be your link to get into the meeting. This link is for members and invited guests only. Do not publish this link.

The next membership meeting will be Monday April 20 at 7pm. Look for an email with the link so that you can join in. If you do not get an email with the link, please contact me via email at n9ymc at arrl dot net or n9ymc at yahoo dot com and I will send the link to you.

Look forward to seeing everyone this Monday evening at the zoom virtual meeting

April General Membership Meeting

by: N9YMC

CQ CQ CQ, attention all club members. The April 20 General Membership meeting will be held via zoom. Zoom is a virtual online meeting place. The way to join the meeting is to follow the link on an email that you will receive. When you follow this link, a small app will open on your computer and ask you to join the meeting with video utilizing your built-in camera or your add-on camera. Don't worry if you do not have a camera, as you can also join the meeting with audio only. You will however be able to see everyone else in the meeting that has joined with video and audio.

A valid email address is required to join in on a zoom meeting. Make sure that a current valid email address is registered with your membership data with the club.

There will be a test zoom session this coming Saturday. Watch for the email to be able to join in on the test, then once the test is successful, watch for the next email with the link to join the meeting this coming Monday at 7pm.

If not a current member but would like to join the meeting as a guest, please send me an email at n9ymc (at) arrl dot net and an invitation to join will be sent to you.

Look forward to seeing you at the meeting.

Monthly meetings to be online for the foreseeable future

by: N9YMC

Over the next 10 days or so, the Board of the FCARC will be doing a series of Zoom "virtual meeting" tests in order to prepare to use it for our April and possibly May General Membership meetings. The way this will work is that an email will go out to each of the members of the club in the week leading up to the General Membership meeting. The email will show the date and time of the meeting (for example April 20 at 7:00pm). The email will also have a link that will need to be clicked on at the time that you want to join the meeting.

There are two ways to join the meeting, one with both video and audio via a computer with a camera, or via a phone call for audio only. If you choose to join with your computer for both video and audio, we plan a test session for the week prior to the actual meeting. The test session will allow you to click on the link and get your video and audio set up properly.

The program Zoom, once you click on the link will download a small client program to your computer and will ask you permission to do so and use your camera.

We are fortunate to have at least two of our board members that have hosting capabilities for the zoom sessions, as there is no cost to you to join in on a session / General Membership virtual meeting.

FYI- the first time I did it, I logged in 15 minutes before the session time in order to get the app downloaded, set up and tested. It was very intuitive and easy to do.

I look forward to seeing you all at the next virtual General Membership meeting.

EAA Special Event Station getting some press

Amateur Radio Being Showcased at 2019 EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin
07/22/2019
ARRL member-volunteers will be part of the excitement as the 2019 International Experimental Aircraft Association annual AirVenture show gets under way this week in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The show runs from July 22 until July 29. This year marks the 50th anniversary of EAA AirVenture, which drew more than 600,000 visitors and 10,000 aircraft last year. The ARRL exhibit highlights radio communications, encouraging pilots and aviation enthusiasts to discover the many facets of Amateur Radio and to expand their interest in technology. ARRL Product Development Manager Bob Inderbitzen, NQ1R, organized the booth (#2152 in Hangar B) and all-volunteer team.

“This is a great opportunity to show off Amateur Radio at such a large-scale event,” Inderbitzen said. “There’s a kindship among the aviation and Amateur Radio communities. In addition to introducing newcomers to ham radio, we met over 600 ham-pilots at last year’s AirVenture.” (See “Growing Amateur Radio, One Pilot at a Time,” January 2019, QST, pp. 77 – 80.)

Icom America and EAA Warbirds of America have organized special event station W9W, which will be on the air all week from AirVenture. Look for W9W on 40 through 10 meters and on VHF and UHF. The station will be set up against the backdrop of the display of historic and vintage ex-military aircraft.

Members of the Fox Cities Amateur Radio Club (FCARC) are operating W9ZL from the nearby Pioneer Airport. The station is located within KidVenture, which is filled with activities for children and youth attending AirVenture. (See the ARRL Special Events database for further details about W9ZL and W9W.)

Tying in with the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, EAA AirVenture will host Apollo 11 crew member Michael Collins on Friday, July 26, as the event’s featured guest. Joining Collins during the evening program at Theater in the Woods will be Apollo Program astronaut Joe Engle.

Corn Roast August 18, 2018

by: N9YMC

The Corn Roast is just around the corner. We will be at the Open Shelter at Memorial Park in Neenah this year. The date is August 18. Many will start showing up at 11am and plan to eat at noon'ish. There will be a Fox Hunt so bring your HT and Fox Hunting gear. Please note that fancy beams are not necessary for locating the fox as many a ham has used body attenuation to their advantage.

The club will provide brats, burgers, corn and soda / water. Please bring a dish to pass.

The Open Shelter at Memorial Park is accessible by exiting I-41 at Winneconne Ave (Hwy 114) to the west. Go past Walmart / Kohls and turn south on Tullar Rd towards the Neenah High School. Memorial Park surrounds the High School and the shelter that we are at (Open Shelter) is off of Apple Blossom Dr going west from Tullar. Go past the baseball diamond and turn north into the park. There are 2 shelters near this entrance, ours is northerly of the two. The parking in front of the shelter holds 10-12 vehicles, though there is another lot a few steps away that will hold all the others.

Look forward to seeing you all at the Corn Roast on August 18.
