CQ FIELD DAY, CQ FIELD DAY from Whiskey 9 Zulu Lima, W9ZL.

by: AB9AH

CQ FIELD DAY, CQ FIELD
DAY from Whiskey 9 Zulu
Lima, W9ZL.
This sentence will be heard the fourth
weekend of the month of June. Yes ARRL’s
Field Day event will be this June 25th and 26th
that’s Saturday and Sunday. The Fox Cities
Amateur Radio Club will once again operate
Field Day at the Valley Aero Modelers airfield,
W5007 Quarry Road Appleton, which is just east of Mackville.
What is Field Day? Well taken from the ARRL’s website:
“Field Day is ham radio's open house. Every June, more than 40,000 hams throughout North America
set up temporary transmitting stations in public places to demonstrate ham radio's science, skill and
service to our communities and our nation. It combines public service, emergency preparedness,
community outreach, and technical skills all in a single event. Field Day has been an annual event since
1933, and remains the most popular event in ham radio.”
It is a contest of sorts where you or your organization try to contact as many stations as possible within
a 24-hour period.
For FCARC, Field Day is a time to set up a couple of temporary stations, running off portable generators
using temporary erected antennas. We like to operate a 2 Alpha station which means we will run 2
radios at a time on the low bands in various modes. We could operate SSB, CW, RTTY or FT8. In
addition, we will have a VHF/UHF station operating 6 meters and up. We will also have a satellite
station which you can see and try to make satellite contacts. If your new to amateur radio (one year or
less) you could operate on our GOTA (Get On The Air) station which will allow you to operate the
contest in a noncompetitive mode atmosphere. You don’t even need a Ham license to operate the
GOTA station. We will also have members available to demonstrate how Fusion or DMR works. If you
never worked any of the digital modes like RTTY or FT8, you could learn how it works, and sit down by
the computer and operate some digital modes. With a little luck, the 6-meter band may open and
maybe you can contact stations as far as Texas or Florida on 6 meters. You can also learn a little about
some logging programs and operating techniques. Of course, if you’re a season operator or contester,
your more than welcome and help build up some contesting points for FCARC.
As mentioned earlier, Field Day is the weekend of June 25th and 26th. It begins at 1pm on Saturday and
ends at 1pm on Sunday. We will be gathering at the VAM airfield about 8am on Saturday to begin
setting up. We will have the Ham Van with its 45-foot tower to elevate a rotatable 40-meter dipole,
VHF/UHF beams and some wire antennas for the low band. Your help in setting up is always welcome.
Many of us will be out at the site for the entire event. As in the past we will have a pizza run Saturday
evening to help keep us fed for the night.
We would like to get as many club members out to Field Day as possible and get everyone on the air. If
you can help set up, or help take everything down, or want to operator in wee hours of the night or any
time of the day, mark you calendar and come out to Field Day. Let Terry, N9AOT, know if you can help,
operate or have any equipment that we can use for Field Day. You can contact Terry at 920-572-2937 or
email terryaot@live.com

EAA W9ZL Event Station Canceled for 2021

by: AB9AH

After much discussion and review the Club has decided we can not hold the EAA W9ZL Event Station his year. With sharing of microphones and radio equipment, and having to be in close proximity to log contacts and train the kids in equipment use we felt it couldn't be done safely. I realize that precautions are starting to be rolled back now, but I have missed the publishing dead lines for event announcements in the hobby publications and also have not started recruiting the 20+ people needed to man the shifts.

It is my full intent to run the event again in 2022. Sorry to not have better news for you.

Thanks

EAA cancels AirVenture in Oshkosh for 2020 due to COVID-19 pandemic

by: AB9AH

The Experimental Aircraft Association in Oshkosh announced Friday that AirVenture, its annual convention that draws 10,000 aircraft and 600,000 visitors from around the world, will not be held this summer.

“We looked at every possibility over the past six weeks as to how EAA could move forward with AirVenture this year, because it is such an important reunion for the aviation community,” said Jack J. Pelton, the EAA's CEO and Chairman of the Board. “The current status in Wisconsin is that it is still under a stay at home order until May 26, which completely eliminates our ability to start grounds preparation May 1. The reopening of the state also has no specific dates, creating uncertainty about mass gatherings in July. Ultimately, preserving the health and safety of all who would attend – and all the varying guidelines between states and countries from where our participants arrive – along with the massive commitments needed now for an event to meet EAA’s high standards, made cancellation the only option for this year.”

I'd like to thank everyone who had volunteered for the 2020 W9ZL Special Event Station. I hope to have you all agin helping when I setup for Airventure 2021.

Stay safe & healthy.

Addtional Volunteers are needed for EAA 2019

by: AB9AH

Fellow FCARC members,

I have just received the following request from David Zimma KJ7JG. It had been first discussed during the 2018 Kidventure the aspect of adding an electronics booth to the Kidventure projects area. The children would be building a small receiver tuned on the control tower frequency. The project would entail some basic soldering of through hole components on a circuit board. .

This proposal has now become part of the Kidventure workshops for 2019 .For our volunteers it would be an additional option besides the radio special event station operations for anyone interested in helping out at the 2019 EAA Kidventure.

Contact David as listed below and also please advise me if you are interested in participating.

Jon Oldenburg AB9AH
=============

We are in need of several volunteers for this year's EAA Kidventure crystal
radio assembly booth. It is the first year we will be doing it and could use
10-20 volunteers that are OK working with children. There will be only thru
hole parts and soldering. Around 20 parts in all.

Please call me to discuss or for more information. 352-444-9806

Maintain funding for NIST stations WWV & WWVH

by: AB9AH

NIST station WWV and sister stations are among the oldest radio stations in the United States, having been in continuous operation since May 1920. The station has transmitted the official US Time for nearly 100 years, and is an instrumental part in the telecommunications field, ranging from broadcasting to scientific research and education. Additionally, these stations transmit marine storm warnings from the National Weather Service, GPS satellite health reports, and specific information concerning current solar activity, and radio propagation conditions. These broadcasts are an essential resource to the worldwide communications industry. This petition requests continued funding of these stations be maintained into the 21st century and beyond to ensure future operation.

There is an online petition available to sign for the purpose of keeping
WWV funded. Here's a link: https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/maintain-funding-nist-stations-wwv-wwvh

I have signed it - it's easy.

As Section Manager Don led the way for many of the improvements Amateur

2018 EAA Special Event Station

by: AB9AH

The 2018 EAA Special event station was a great success. This was the first year
that W9ZL was on the air for the entire Airventure Fly-in, seven days, up from a
3-day event only a few years ago. We had great participation from both the Fox
cities Amateur Radio Club members and also had a good number of operators that
signed on from other clubs through out the state via the ARRL.

Some quick overview statistics for the 2018 W9ZL EAA Special Event Station
follow:
33 volunteer operators
446 volunteer hours worked
Over 100 visiting licensed radio amateurs in the guest log
700+ contacts made during the event( despite an solar flare on 7/25!).

Also new for the EAA in 2018 the ARRL had it's first ever presence at
Airventure, setting up a booth in Hanger "B" of the fly-in's market area. Kermit
Carlson W9XA reported the ARRL booth as being a huge success with many visiting
radio operators and a lot of interest from the general public in our hobby.

EAA Special Event Station Sign-up to Close on 05/14/2018

by: AB9AH

The EAA 2018 Special Event Station sign up had been scheduled to close on
5/07/2018. It is an unpublished fact that for 2018 the ARRL will have a presence
in Hanger "B" at Airventure 2018. We will have a 70cm radio link established
between the two sites, and personal interaction between them is anticipated also.

To accommodate the ARRL I am letting sign up stay open until 5/14/2018
accordingly, as there are currently a few shift openings still left open. This
will allow any additional ARRL members to sign on.

This is a first time participation for the ARRL at EAA, and their co-sign with
the W9ZL Special Event Station is unprecedented.

Those who have been included on the 2018 Event e-mail test e-mails are assigned
to their requested shifts. Additional e-mails shall follow with event station
details.

W1AW to begin scheduled transmissions on 6 meters starting January 2, 2018

by: AB9AH

Beginning with the 9 AM EST fast code practice on Tuesday, January
2, 2018, W1AW will add 6 meters - specifically 50350 kHz - to its
regular CW code practice, and CW, digital and phone bulletin
transmission schedule.

Prior to late 1989, W1AW had a presence on 6 meters for all its CW
practice, and regular bulletins. Since that time however, the
station was absent on 6 meters, with the exception of regular
visitor operations and contests.

In addition to providing regularly scheduled transmissions on 6
meters, another goal is to act as a beacon on 6 meters, especially
from the Northeast US.

Signal reports will be welcome. A web page that will allow
listeners to provide signal reports will be made available after the
start date. Reports may also be emailed to W1AW at, w1aw@arrl.org.

2017 EAA Special Event Station Results

by: AB9AH

I have compiled a summary of our operations for the W9ZL 2017 EAA Special Event
Station operations at EAA Airventure 2017. In spite of poor radio band conditions the Event had a successful operation for 2017, logging 937 total contacts. The majority of these contacts (693) where made on the 20-meter radio band (14.260 MHz) again due to band conditions causing poor propagation for the 40-meter band (7.250 MHz). A bonus this year was openings on the 6-meter band occurred daily starting on Thursday afternoon.

Here is a summary of the stations daily numbers:

Overall Event total - 937 Contacts

This is a pretty good return for a operation during rather poor band conditions
and is quite successful in being comparable to past operations that operated in
under better (band) conditions. I give much credit to my station operators
diligence and determination in keeping the station operating continually during
the event looking for contacts.

2016 EAA Special Event Station Summary

by: AB9AH

I have compiled a summary of our operations for the W9ZL 2016 EAA Special Event
Station operations at EAA Airventure 2016. In spite of poor radio band conditions due to a solar storm that occurred on July 25 2016 the Event had a successful operation for 2016, logging 612 total contacts. The majority of these contacts (504) where made on the 20-meter radio band (14.260 MHz)again due to band conditions causing poor propagation for the 40-meter band (7.250 MHz).

Here is a summary of the stations daily numbers:

Overall Event total - 612 Contacts

This is a pretty good return for a operation during rather poor band conditions
and is quite successful in being comparable to past operations that operated in
under better (band)conditions. I give much credit to my station operators
diligence and determination in keeping the station operating continually during
the event looking for contacts.

EAA Special Event Station 2016 - Youth Protection Program

by: AB9AH

Hello EAA Volunteers,

I have just received this information regarding volunteer workers for the EAA
Kidventure area. Be sure to participate in this program so you can participate
in the 2016 FCARC EAA Special Event Station, July 27 thru 31 2016.

(January 21, 2016) - As EAA approaches the 25th anniversary of EAA’s Young Eagles program, we can celebrate the success it has been for nearly 2 million young
people. One of the biggest reasons for this success is by volunteers making the
flight experience a positive, memorable one.

Continuing that positive legacy means maintaining EAA’s high standards that have
been part of the organization since Paul Poberezny founded it 63 years ago. Last
week, Young Eagles volunteers were sent information regarding some
administrative changes that keep EAA in step with best practices that are common
in youth education and recreation programs throughout the nation, ranging from
scout programs to youth sports leagues.

The new Youth Protection Program, which was first introduced as a concept in
newsletters during 2015 to Young Eagles chapter coordinators and pilots, as well
as at AirVenture 2015, will involve many EAA volunteers who work with young
people. It will include online best-practices training and a basic background
check to create the safest environment possible for young people in our programs
and to protect our volunteers.

This training is available to all EAA volunteers who work with youth and Young
Eagles pilots, chapter coordinators, and field representatives, free of charge,
at: www.eaa.org/youthprotection . We encourage you to participate early, as we
will require that all participants in EAA and EAA chapter activities that serve
youth to have successfully completed the training by May 1, 2016. After that
date, EAA and chapter programs for youth will require full compliance with the
training and background checks.

If you’re wondering whether your volunteer activities should comply with the
training and background check, review the Frequently Asked Questions sheet at
the website mentioned above. In the first few days of access to this website,
nearly 1,000 EAA volunteers have already completed the training and background
check process, and we appreciate their prompt action.

The company working with EAA in this process, AmericanChecked, is among the
leaders in the industry and works with many colleges, school districts, and
governmental agencies. A top priority of the exhaustive process to select the
right company to work with EAA and its volunteers was the safety and security of
any data collected. More information on that is available on the FAQ webpage,
and we welcome questions and suggestions at any time at feedback@eaa.org.

EAA’s programs have earned an outstanding reputation because of the volunteers
and our organization. We aim to maintain that reputation and instill the youth
protection guidelines and culture that parents and guardians seek in all
programs for their kids.
