Fox Valley Grid

Change to Fox Hunt

by: WI9MMM

Since I will be participating in the St. Joe's Food Pantry 5k on Saturday, October 5th, the fox hunt will be moved to the following Saturday.
We could still use more volunteers for the St Joe's event.
If the weather holds, we will do one more hunt in November.  That is To Be Determined and is up to Mother Nature.

Saturday, October 12th, 0730 - 1630 (or until the battery dies)
Somewhere in the Fox Valley on 147.555MHz
It can be heard with a HT from the 41/441 loop.
Since Fox Hunting is a receive only activity, all future and current Hams are welcome to participate.
PLEASE DO NOT post where it is when you find it. A simple "Found it!" on our Facebook page is enough. Allow others the thrill of the hunt.
There are NO prizes.
Use your best judgement on what information you share. After noon... hints can be blatant.

Upcoming Community Support Events

by: WI9MMM

We have two opportunities in the next month to support our communities and raise awareness about our hobby.
The Otto Grunski Runski, September 28th, to benefit the Menasha Parks and Recreation Family Assistance Fund.
St. Joe's 5K/10K, October 5th, to benefit the St Joseph Food Pantry.

Otto Grunski is a new event for us. They estimate needing our help from 7:45am to 9:45am.
St Joe's has been from 7:30am to 9:30-ish. They did add "10K" - so the runners may wind up doing two laps. I expect that they will still finish before many of the walkers.

FCARC Annual Picnic

by: WI9MMM

This year's annual picnic is Saturday, August 17th, starting at 11am.

This is a family event so bring the folks you hold dear.

It's a potluck so please bring a dish to pass. The club will provide brats, burgers, hot dogs and soda/water. We'll have corn if I can find it.

Sunset Park, Kimberly, Pavilion #1.

We should have a fox hunt and you are encouraged to bring some radio gear to show off. Sorry, no raffle.

If you have questions, please use the Contact Us page and we'll try to get them answered.

FCARC Fox Hunt at Annual Picnic

by: WI9MMM

We will be doing the monthly fox hunt at the annual picnic this month instead of on Social Saturday. See everyone at the picnic.

FCARC Fox Hunt - July 6th NEW FOX - Lower Power

by: WI9MMM

Radio is about experimenting. Well... we are going to try a new, lower power fox. The "normal" fox is 700mW. The July fox will be 53mW.
46mW on WSPR made it to Antartica. I guess we'll all see how far 53mW goes in the Fox Valley. We may have to work together on this hunt. :-)

Saturday, July 6th. 0730 - 1630 - or until the batteries run out. The fox manufacturer says it should last until about 3:30pm. We'll see.
147.555MHz Somewhere in the Fox Cities. See Map.
Since Fox Hunting is a receive only activity, all future and current Hams are welcome to participate.
PLEASE DO NOT post where it is when you find it. A simple "Found it!" on our Facebook page is enough. Allow others the thrill of the hunt.
There are NO prizes.
Depending on the difficulty hearing the new fox, sharing a grid square might be in order.
Use your best judgement on what information you share. After noon... hints can be blatant.

FCARC Fox Hunt - June 1st

by: WI9MMM

Saturday, June 1st. 0730 - 1630 - or until the batteries run out.
147.555MHz Somewhere in the Fox Cities. See Map.
Since Fox Hunting is a receive only activity, all future and current Hams are welcome to participate.
PLEASE DO NOT post where it is when you find it. A simple "Found it!" is enough. Allow others the thrill of the hunt.
There are NO prizes.
Later in the day if someone needs a few hints... go for it.
You will be able to hear the fox from the 41/441 loop with a HT in the car. That's how I verify that it is getting out.
Have fun!

Ham Van Mast Auction

by: WI9MMM

After MUCH discussion, the FCARC Board of Directors has decided to auction off the Ham Van mast assembly. The mast includes the cable and the air compressor.

The FCARC Board of Directors will accept written sealed bids through the end of Field Day, June 23, 2024. What ever time we finish tearing down is when we stop accepting bids. Bids that are mailed must be received in our P.O. Box by Friday, June 21st. Bids will be for a specific monetary amount. No contingencies, escalators or other modifiers will be honored.
There is ample time to submit bids so all late bids will be destroyed without review.

The mast and its accessories are being sold “as is” with no expressed or implied warranty. Any person submitting a bid agrees to hold harmless the Fox Cities Amateur Radio Club for any and all current or future events related to the mast and/or its assemblies. Again, the winning bidder assumes and accepts all liability for everything related to the mast once it is theirs.

The winning bidder must submit payment and take possession of the mast upon notification of the winning bid. The winner will have no more than 15 calendar days to make payment and take possession lest their bid be deemed null and void and a subsequent bidder selected.
We WILL NOT ship the mast or its accessories. Currently, the mast is being stored in De Pere, Wisconsin.

The sealed bids will be opened by the Board of Directors when there is quorum, but not later than July 14th. Should the winning bid result in a tie, the winner will be determined by the earliest postmark or timestamp. Sealed bids handed to a Board of Directors member will be marked with the date and time of the submission. If the timestamps of the equal winning bids are the same, the winner will be selected by a random drawing.

Please direct any questions to the FCARC Board of Directors by using the Contact Us page on the club website, fcarc.club.

Our annual awards banquet will be held at Holiday's Pub & Grill in Appleton. 3950 N Richmond St.

IF YOU ARE COMING, WE NEED TO KNOW BY NOON ON FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 16TH!!

We get billed by how many people show up.

The menu is traditional chicken & beef tips, mashed potatoes, corn and dinner rolls. Drinks are on your own. None are provided.

We typically start to gather around 5pm with dinner served at 6pm. The ceremonial stuff will happen after dinner.

Renew Your FCARC Membership

by: WI9MMM

Just in case you haven't done it already, now is the time to renew your FCARC membership.

Club membership is for a calendar year. For most folks, that $20.
Renewing on the club website using PayPal is the easiest way.
For future reference, you can renew early and you don't lose any time. Your membership still goes to the last day of December of whatever year you are renewing for.
If you've lasped in your membership, renew for 2024 and you're a member for 2024.

Any questions, contact us using the Contact Us page.

Cleaning Up Membership Roster

by: WI9MMM

Some of you may have noticed that the Membership Roster is missing.
Managing club memberships on this platform is a pain, so we are moving to HamClubOnline.com.
If you have never logged in, use the email address that you get your club newsletter with and click on (Forgot Password?) - right underneath where you just typed your email address in.
We will be using HamClubOnline moving forward.

Some folks will have received an email notification that they have been removed from the roster. This is because your club membership expired in 2021. So... you didn't renew in 2021, 2022 or yet in 2023.
If this is a major "Oops!", contact us. Or you can just renew for 2024. Adding folks back in is easy enough on HamClubOnline.

December Meeting 50/50

by: WI9MMM

Most members know that our December General Membership meeting is a bit different than our other meetings. We conduct a little business and then we share a potluck dinner.
Bring a dish to pass. Bring your friends and loved ones.

This year, we'll have a 50/50 raffle and the prize is...
a Yaesu FTM-200DR!!

Monday, December 18th. 7pm. Maplewood Middle School.
See you there.

ARRL Email Forwarding Issues

by: WI9MMM

I received an email from HamClubOnline stating that given the number of issues with the ARRL email forwarding service, they are suspending emails sent to @arrl.org addresses.

This presents a challenge in that we are moving towards using the HamClubOnline email service to share our club newsletter and other announcements.

If you are using an ARRL email address, please give us an alternate email while ARRL works through these issues. Otherwise, we can't help keep you informed.

Thank You PaceSetters!

by: WI9MMM

PaceSetters of the Fox Cities has presented the Fox Cities Amateur Radio Club with an award for Dedication and Service. This is super cool and greatly appreciated.
Support of the community is one of the cornerstones of our club; one of the reasons we exist. While it's a lot of fun to help out, it's also very nice to be recognized for our efforts.
Thank you, PaceSetters!

145.330MHz Repeater Update

by: WI9MMM

The 145.330MHz repeater is back on the air. Digital is back, Baby! Yeah!

Kudos to Andy Lawton, AJ9L, for coordinating and leading the project to get not one, but two, antennas back on the Neenah water tower. As soon as Andy turned the repeater back on, there was traffic. Cool stuff!

A special THANK YOU to Rick Kosiorek, WJ9K, for doing all the ground work. It's a critical job and Andy and I greatly appreciate you for doing it. You rock!

Finally, another "Thank You" to Tony Mach, AB9IO, for championing this opportunity. It's awesome and the folks at the Water Department are super helpful.

So... go radio.

FCARC Build Day - March 25, 2023 1100-1400 CDT

by: WI9MMM

Five people braved the aweful weather to participate in this Build Day. Thanks also to KC (KG9JP) and Donna (KC9THF) for hanging out after VE Testing. Super thanks to John (K9KI) for keeping the sidewalk open.
As best as I know, everyone's Morse Code Practice Oscillators worked. Everyone also took a crack at building the attenuator. It wasn't as easy as I remembered. We didn't really have a method to test those so hopefully they will get some use during the next fox hunt.
Brave souls:
Chris Reitz – N9CVR and Elizabeth
Mike Casper – KC9SCP
Tim Crowe – KD9WNE
Stan Meyer – KD9OOO

For those that didn't make it, completely understandable. I'll try to remmeber to bring the Morse Code Practice Oscillator to the next General Membership meeting. It's still $5 each. Exact change is appreciated. :-)
Garth Schneider – KD9UHW
Matthew Suprise – KD9WAW
Zachariah Monasmith – KD9TQP and son

Joel Kasper, WI4WD, is FCARC 2022 Ham Of The Year

by: WI9MMM

Congratulations to Joel Kasper, WI4WD, for being the Fox Cities Amateur Radio Club's Ham Of The Year!
We thank Joel for all that he's done to earn this honor. Joel has been a Member-at-Large for quite a while and was instrumental in getting the Maplewood Middle School station up and running, to name a few of his accomplishments.
Joel took the opportunity of receiving the award to call for volunteers to mentor new people, especially the youth, into the hobby. Anyone with interest should let the club know using the Contact Us link of the club website.
Also receiving honorable mention for their HOTY nominations were Tony Mach, AB9IO, and KC Ross, KG9JP.

FCARC Annual Banquet - February 18, 2023

by: WI9MMM

Come join us at the Fox Cities Amateur Radio Club Annual Banquet.
We have a new venue; Holidays Pub & Grill, 3950 N Richmond St, Appleton, WI 54913
We typically start in the bar around 5pm and look to eat about 6pm.

We also have a new format. Instead of buying a banquet ticket and having a buffet, we will be ordering (and paying) individually from the menu.
Please check out their website so you know what's on the menu. https://holidayspub.com/
This means that if you change your mind to attend at the last minute... no harm, no foul.

PLEASE let us know if you'll be attending and if you'll be bringing anyone with you. We would like to let Holidays know about how many to expect. board@fcarc.club
Thanks, Mike

by: WI9MMM

The Fox Cities Amateur Radio Club is proud to announce that Andy Lawton, AJ9L, is our 2021 Ham Of The Year.
Andy's contributions as Club Vice-President and Repeater Committee Chairman have been invaluable to the success of our club. Andy has also repaired our antennas and amplifiers, moved a bunch of repeater equipment, provided the tech support back when we had Zoom meetings, manages much of the club supplies and equipment and a host of other, behind-the-scenes tasks that help keep our club running.
Please be sure to congratulate Andy on his award and thank him for his outstanding contribution to the FCARC.

What Do You Want To See?

by: WI9MMM

At the January General Membership Meeting, Joel (WI4WD) circulated a survey of potential program topics.
Programs... you know, the thing right before the raffle? The part of the meeting where we learn, do or share something? Yeah. That.

Gene (our Secretary, KE8KWF) has made the survey available ONLINE for everyone to share their opinion. It's a rank/order. Select the one you want the most and give it your #1. The next program that you would like to see presented, give it your #2. All the way to #10.
https://bit.ly/ham-program

Thanks for your input. Here's to making the club better.

Morning Coffee Klatch

by: WI9MMM

In case you haven't heard, there's a morning ragchew net.
It happens on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 0930.
It has recently been moved back to 146.760 MHz repeater.
Join in if you can make it.

It's Renewal Time!

by: WI9MMM

For those that have already renewed... THANK YOU! We even have three members that are renewed to the end of 2023!
Unfortunately... only half of us have renewed. 44 of 115 (plus a few of you that renewed in person)

For those that have yet to renew... please do. Your support helps keep the club financially stable.

If you have renewed but you still got the HamClubOnline expiration notice, sorry. We're a bit behind in processing the renewals. As of the posting of this notice (12/31), all of the online renewals have been posted. I'll try to check it weekly for the next month or so.

In case you missed it, we no longer charge the PayPal processing fee - so $20 is $20. And you'll get a receipt of payment.

Thanks to all for your understanding. Renewals are not as much fun as you think they might be.

A Farewell to Zoom

by: WI9MMM

The FCARC General Membership Meeting will return to it original, in-person form on Monday, June 21st, 2021.
Thank you, Zoom. You served us well but your time is done. You may stand down.

I want to extend a serious THANK YOU to Donna, Andy and Joel for their extraordinary efforts to give us this option during the COVID-19 pandemic. We are grateful.

For those attending the General Membership Meeting, Maplewood Middle School asks that we follow current CDC guidance on masks.

Thank You, Terry and Bernie

by: WI9MMM

On behalf of the FCARC, I want to say thank you to Terry Schilling, N9AOT, for his eight years of service as club secretary. I would also like to say thank you to Bernie Hengels, N9YMC, for his four years of service as club president. Both of these gentlemen put their heart into making our club a warm and welcoming place where the new ham and the seasoned ham are treated as equals.

Thank you, Bernie and Terry, for investing the time into promoting amateur radio and, more importantly, into improving the ham radio experience for everyone that you came in contact with. I know that you both will continue to support the club but I wanted to publicly applaud you for all the work, support and (yes) sacrifice you put into making and keeping the club great.

I salute you both for a job well done. Much appreciated. Mike, WI9MMM

Thank You Terry & Gary!

Gary Hoehne, KB9AIT, and Terry Schilling, N9AOT, were recognized at the March General Membership meeting for their phenomenal support of the Fox Cities Amateur Radio Club. 2019 Ham Of The Year Donna Mendyke, KC9THF, presented plaques expressing our gratitude for Gary and Terry's support, both in their activity and continued stewardship. We wouldn't be the same club without you guys. Again, thank you.

For the new folks, Terry and Gary own Wolf River Coils. When you're ready for HF, you need one of their antenna systems. https://www.wolfrivercoils.com/
